Jointing Long Boards

Its All About the Board Diagnosis

"The fastest way to flatten a board whether it be the face or the edge is with a saw."

My students joke that I say this all the time.  But its so true.  Saw an 8 foot board in half and there will be significantly less bow.  And whether working by hand or power you will plane away a lot less wood with a shorter board.

But...sometimes the project needs a long board and cutting it shorter just won't cut it...sorry couldn't resist

That's where this lesson comes to the rescue.  Here I lay out how to diagnose the board and make your plan to flatten and square the edge.

In this 15 minute lesson, I show how to diagnose the longer edge and hand plane it perfectly flat and square.  This same approach can be used on longer faces and is much easier without the need to square it.
